Recipe of the Month: Healthy Eating from the Team

Bringing nutrition into WHP in a participatory way: The recipe of the month is an affordable, recurring component that keeps the topic of nutrition alive in the long term.

Why do tips from colleagues resonate better?

A nutrition flyer ends up in the trash, but a colleague’s favorite recipe gets tried out. Recommendations from your own environment have a credibility that an official campaign rarely achieves. When you share your dish, you also take on a bit of responsibility for the topic – turning consumers into participants.

How much effort does it take?

The process is incredibly simple: Every month, a different person shares an easy, healthy recipe on the intranet. This costs the editorial team almost nothing and still generates regular interaction. Over time, a curated collection emerges, which in itself is a valuable internal offering.

How does the series stay lively?

The most common mistake is wanting to write everything yourself. The strength lies in participation: Changing authors, perhaps with a brief introduction of the person behind the recipe, keep the series personal and fresh. A fixed publication date each month provides reliability – and ensures that the recipe of the month becomes something to look forward to. A good addition is the Best Practice Healthy breakfast as a ritual.

How do you put the measure in place?

  1. 1
Choose the channel: intranet page, e-mail distribution list or notice in the kitchen – wherever most people look
  2. 2
Build a recipe pool: collect 8–12 simple, healthy recipes with a short ingredient list and at most 30 minutes of preparation
  3. 3
Define a fixed rule: 1 recipe per month, always on the same date (e.g. the first Monday of the month)
  4. 4
Keep the format lean: photo, ingredients, 3–5 steps – no nutrition lecture, no calorie tables
  5. 5
Announce it briefly: "From this month, every first Monday brings a simple, healthy recipe."
  6. 6
Start with a strong recipe that suits everyday life (e.g. overnight oats or a 15-minute bowl)
  7. 7
Invite people to cook it and pass it on – without pressure, purely as an offer
  8. 8
Publish the recipe on the fixed date every month – reliability matters more than perfection
  9. 9
Vary the topics: breakfast, lunchtime snack, after-work dish, seasonal fruit and vegetables
  10. 10
Involve colleagues: anyone who likes can contribute a favourite recipe – this strengthens commitment
  11. 11
Optionally lay it out as a card in the coffee kitchen so it is seen without the intranet too
  12. 12
Ask briefly: is it being read? Is it being cooked? A 1-click survey is enough
  13. 13
Check reach: look at intranet views or the e-mail open rate
  14. 14
Decide: continue, adjust the rhythm or curate the recipes together

Tax and health insurance: what is possible

Employer health benefits can be tax-free under § 3 no. 34 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) up to €600 per employee per year — if they are provided in addition to the salary already owed and are either certified (§ 20 SGB V) or implemented within the company's health promotion process. Gym memberships and corporate fitness are not covered. For ZPP-certified courses (e.g. from Upfit), German statutory health insurers can reimburse all or part of the course fee to their insured members — then only the amount exceeding that reimbursement is tax-free. Projects within the company can be funded under § 20b SGB V, with no entitlement. Only your tax adviser can confirm the tax exemption.
