The fruit basket is the cliché of workplace health promotion (WHP) – and yet it has something that many more elaborate measures lack: it is visible every day, available every day, and used every day. This makes it an effective signal for a WHP culture in the making.
Why is the simplest often the most consistent?
Hardly any offer signals genuine WHP as accessibly as fresh fruit that is simply there. No registration, no changing clothes, no overcoming barriers. When you take an apple, you are not making a conscious health decision – but you are not eating a cookie. These small shifts add up. Companies that consistently offer a well-stocked fruit basket often observe that less sweets are eaten in the office – not because they have banned anything, but because a better alternative was always within reach.
How does the fruit basket become part of a nutrition culture?
A fruit basket alone is a gesture. A fruit basket plus the occasional nutrition tip plus an info card about seasonal fruit becomes a routine. If you stock the basket seasonally and briefly explain why there are cherries instead of bananas this week, you turn a convenient extra into a small learning moment – with little effort and a small budget. Why a fruit basket alone is not yet health management is explained in the guide Health promotion vs. health management.
How do you put the measure in place?
- 1Choose a regional supplier or weekly market and set a weekly budget and a delivery quantity per person.
- 2Plan a varied selection beyond apples and bananas: seasonal fruit, nuts and dried fruit in weekly rotation.
- 3Pick a clearly visible, central location for the basket and prepare a template for the weekly nutrient info card.
- 4Set up the first basket at the central location and place the matching info card next to it.
- 5Let the team know that from now on there will be fresh fruit, nuts and dried fruit every week – free of charge and for everyone.
- 6Ask for first feedback on which varieties go down especially well.
- 7Make sure the weekly delivery arrives and vary the selection so that variety is maintained.
- 8Replace the info card every week and briefly introduce a new variety with its nutrients.
- 9Watch freshness and quantity and adjust the order to actual consumption.
- 10Check once a month how much fruit is eaten and whether the quantity matches demand.
- 11Ask the team which varieties are favourites and what else they would like.
- 12Adjust supplier, budget or selection as needed and keep the offer attractive in the long term.

Tax and health insurance: what is possible
Employer health benefits can be tax-free under § 3 no. 34 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) up to €600 per employee per year — if they are provided in addition to the salary already owed and are either certified (§ 20 SGB V) or implemented within the company's health promotion process. Gym memberships and corporate fitness are not covered. For ZPP-certified courses (e.g. from Upfit), German statutory health insurers can reimburse all or part of the course fee to their insured members — then only the amount exceeding that reimbursement is tax-free. Projects within the company can be funded under § 20b SGB V, with no entitlement. Only your tax adviser can confirm the tax exemption.
