Healthy Nutrition

Nutrition counseling in the workplace often fails because it tries to do too much at once: dietary overhauls, calorie counting, meal-prep instructions. Nutrition info works differently – small, practical for everyday life, without prohibitions.

What can a weekly tip do better than a nutrition seminar?

A well-placed nutrition tip – as a short poster in the kitchen, a paragraph in the internal newsletter, a short video on the intranet – reaches people at the exact moment food decisions are made: at lunch, when reaching for a snack, while shopping for the next day. No seminar can do that. Providing knowledge in that moment, rather than setting rules, activates self-determination instead of resistance.

Which topics actually land?

Not 'Eat less sugar,' but 'Why does sugar make you tired at 3 p.m.?' Not 'Eat more vegetables,' but 'These five ingredients make a lunch sandwich truly filling.' Concrete, explanatory, without a moralizing tone. The best nutrition info answers a question employees already had – and leaves them feeling smarter for having read it. How do you put the measure in place?

  1. 1
Check the current situation: what do the canteen or catering offers look like at present, are there healthy options?
  2. 2
Seek a conversation with the canteen operator or caterer to agree more balanced dishes and water/fruit offers
  3. 3
Ask a nutrition adviser and arrange a date for a cooking workshop
  4. 4
Present the new offers – e.g. a healthier menu line, free fruit, water dispensers
  5. 5
Announce the nutrition advice and cooking workshop and invite people to sign up
  6. 6
Stress that it is about enjoyment and simple everyday tips, not about bans
  7. 7
Anchor healthier options permanently in the range and place them in a clearly visible spot
  8. 8
Hold the cooking workshop and nutrition advice, and offer series of dates
  9. 9
Sprinkle in small prompts – e.g. recipe of the week or a fruit basket in the break room
  10. 10
Collect feedback: are the healthier options accepted, what does the team want?
  11. 11
Evaluate the sales figures of the new dishes with the canteen or caterer
  12. 12
Take successful offers permanently into the range and plan further prompts

Tax and health insurance: what is possible

Employer health benefits can be tax-free under § 3 no. 34 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) up to €600 per employee per year — if they are provided in addition to the salary already owed and are either certified (§ 20 SGB V) or implemented within the company's health promotion process. Gym memberships and corporate fitness are not covered. For ZPP-certified courses (e.g. from Upfit), German statutory health insurers can reimburse all or part of the course fee to their insured members — then only the amount exceeding that reimbursement is tax-free. Projects within the company can be funded under § 20b SGB V, with no entitlement. Only your tax adviser can confirm the tax exemption.
