Lunch Walk: Walking together instead of sitting
A simple way to systematically integrate physical activity into WHP: a regular lunch walk – low-threshold, easy to document, and an ideal introduction to the field of movement.
Why does a simple lunchtime walk have more impact than a fitness offer?
Most WHP offers fail at the hurdle before they even start: signing up, changing clothes, overcoming reluctance. The lunch walk has none of these barriers. Anyone who wants to can join – spontaneously today, again tomorrow. This very casualness makes it so resilient: there’s nothing to miss out on and nothing to get wrong. Long periods of sitting are the silent strain of office life, and half an hour of movement at midday interrupts them just when the afternoon slump would otherwise begin.
Where does the real effect come from?
When you walk side by side instead of sitting across from each other, you talk differently. Departments that otherwise only communicate by email can resolve in ten minutes on the walk what would have taken half an hour in a meeting. Here, movement is the occasion, connection is the result. Many companies report that informal exchange is the reason why the walk survives – not the step counter.
How does a walk become a regular habit?
Reliability is key: a fixed weekday, a set time, the same route. At first, a small group that simply starts walking is enough – no poster, no campaign. If you combine the walk with a small step challenge, you create visibility without pressure. And if you join as a manager yourself, you send a clear signal: this half hour is allowed. A good addition is the Best Practice Walk & Talk: The Meeting on the Move.

Tax and health insurance: what is possible
Employer health benefits can be tax-free under § 3 no. 34 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) up to €600 per employee per year — if they are provided in addition to the salary already owed and are either certified (§ 20 SGB V) or implemented within the company's health promotion process. Gym memberships and corporate fitness are not covered. For ZPP-certified courses (e.g. from Upfit), German statutory health insurers can reimburse all or part of the course fee to their insured members — then only the amount exceeding that reimbursement is tax-free. Projects within the company can be funded under § 20b SGB V, with no entitlement. Only your tax adviser can confirm the tax exemption.
