In Germany, preventive care often fails not for lack of awareness but for lack of an easy path. Anyone who has to arrange their own doctor's appointment for blood pressure or blood sugar tends to put it off — indefinitely. When measurements can be taken directly at the workplace, that hurdle disappears.
What does a workplace screening achieve?
Voluntary workplace preventive checks capture values that stay invisible in everyday life: high blood pressure produces no symptoms for a long time, elevated blood sugar often goes unnoticed for a long time, and an elevated stress level is only taken seriously once someone sees it on a scale of 1 to 10. Screening makes this visible — in a protected, uncomplicated setting, without a medical diagnosis, but with clear recommendations for action.
How do you make screening day effective?
Anyone who just receives results and is left alone with them is worse off than before. The real value comes from a brief interpretation: What does this value mean? What's a good next step? A doctor or nurse on-site — not to treat, but to guide — makes the difference between a good offering and a very good one. An occupational physician can run an appointment like this – the guide Occupational physician: duty, costs and care models shows the options (German law).
How do you put the measure in place?
- 1Book the occupational physician (Betriebsarzt) or an external provider for check-ups (blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, cholesterol)
- 2Define scope and procedure: a short measurement per person, an understandable explanation of the values, plan time slots
- 3Organise a suitable, discreet room – health values are private
- 4Communicate clearly in advance that it is voluntary and how data protection is handled
- 5Announce the offer: what is measured, why is it valuable (an early baseline)?
- 6Offer time-slot booking to avoid waiting times and crowding at the stand
- 7Stress: voluntary, confidential, results only for the participants
- 8Ensure a smooth, timed procedure (reception, measurement, short explanation)
- 9Make participation possible during working hours
- 10Protect data strictly: no individual values passed on to the employer
- 11For conspicuous values, refer to a medical check – no alarmism
- 12Record only anonymous totals (participation) for WHP reporting
- 13Collect feedback on the process
- 14Derive suitable follow-up measures (e.g. a movement or nutrition offer if conspicuous values are frequent)

Tax and health insurance: what is possible
Employer health benefits can be tax-free under § 3 no. 34 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) up to €600 per employee per year — if they are provided in addition to the salary already owed and are either certified (§ 20 SGB V) or implemented within the company's health promotion process. Gym memberships and corporate fitness are not covered. For ZPP-certified courses (e.g. from Upfit), German statutory health insurers can reimburse all or part of the course fee to their insured members — then only the amount exceeding that reimbursement is tax-free. Projects within the company can be funded under § 20b SGB V, with no entitlement. Only your tax adviser can confirm the tax exemption.
