The Mindfulness Minute: 60 Seconds Against Chronic Stress
Mental health in WHP starts with low-threshold measures: The daily mindfulness minute is a first building block in the area of stress—even before the risk assessment of psychological stress.
Why does the shortest break overcome the biggest hurdle?
When you are stressed, you see a long break as a luxury you can't afford. But everyone can allow themselves a minute—and that's exactly the psychological trick. The low threshold makes it possible to start in the first place. A short breathing exercise can lower tension in the moment and interrupts the stress spiral before it escalates.
Why is the ritual more important than the technique?
Whether it's a guided breathing exercise, a short body scan, or simply a conscious pause—the method is secondary. What works is the repetition at a fixed anchor: always at the same time, ideally together. This turns a good idea into a habit that supports you even on hectic days. Especially during peak times, the minute is often gladly accepted.
How does a first step break the taboo?
Mental health is still a sensitive topic in many workplaces. The mindfulness minute is a quiet, undramatic entry point: It requires no commitment and no therapy, but normalizes the topic of recovery in everyday work life. For many teams, it is the first building block on which larger offerings can later be built. Such offerings strengthen the individual. Where the strain arises within the company itself is only revealed by the risk assessment of psychological stress—in Germany, this is mandatory for every employer.
How do you put the measure in place?
- 1Announce it in the next team meeting: "We're now starting with 1 minute of silence"
- 2Say briefly: "1 minute, close your eyes or look down, just arrive"
- 3Set a timer, 60 seconds of silence
- 4Afterward: the meeting begins – no comment needed

Tax and health insurance: what is possible
Employer health benefits can be tax-free under § 3 no. 34 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) up to €600 per employee per year — if they are provided in addition to the salary already owed and are either certified (§ 20 SGB V) or implemented within the company's health promotion process. Gym memberships and corporate fitness are not covered. For ZPP-certified courses (e.g. from Upfit), German statutory health insurers can reimburse all or part of the course fee to their insured members — then only the amount exceeding that reimbursement is tax-free. Projects within the company can be funded under § 20b SGB V, with no entitlement. Only your tax adviser can confirm the tax exemption.
