Gratitude Board: Making Appreciation Visible

Healthy leadership is a measurable factor in WHP: A gratitude board makes appreciation visible – an effective lever for company culture and mental health.

Why is felt recognition rarely received?

Most people experience recognition too rarely, even though colleagues do feel it – it just isn’t expressed. A board where short thank-you messages are posted lowers the barrier: It feels easier to write a sentence than to say it to someone’s face. And because everyone can read along, each message has double the impact.

When does the board show its strength?

When pressure rises, the positive automatically fades into the background. That’s exactly when a visible board makes the difference: It records what’s going well while everyone is focused only on what’s missing. Psychologically, this is a strong counterbalance to constant stress – and a cost-effective one at that.

What matters when introducing it?

Genuine, not forced: A board only works if contributions are voluntary and honest. Leaders should take the lead and give thanks themselves, but not pressure anyone to participate. Whether it’s an analog pinboard or a digital board is secondary – the main thing is that it’s present and easy to access. The most common mistake is letting it become neglected after the initial enthusiasm; a regular weekly prompt keeps it alive. A good addition is the Best Practice Compliment Challenge.

Tax and health insurance: what is possible

Employer health benefits can be tax-free under § 3 no. 34 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) up to €600 per employee per year — if they are provided in addition to the salary already owed and are either certified (§ 20 SGB V) or implemented within the company's health promotion process. Gym memberships and corporate fitness are not covered. For ZPP-certified courses (e.g. from Upfit), German statutory health insurers can reimburse all or part of the course fee to their insured members — then only the amount exceeding that reimbursement is tax-free. Projects within the company can be funded under § 20b SGB V, with no entitlement. Only your tax adviser can confirm the tax exemption.
