Phone-Free Lunch Break: A Real Break Instead of a Second Screen

Modern work needs clear spaces for recovery: The phone-free lunch break is a WHP component against constant availability – relevant for mental health and healthy leadership.

Why doesn't a break without recovery actually refresh you?

The brain doesn't distinguish between work and the flood of social media stimuli – both keep it in active mode. If you scroll through your break, you come back more exhausted than if you had just kept working. Real recovery needs a break in the stream of stimuli: a conversation, a walk, simply doing nothing. This is exactly the kind of break a phone-free zone protects.

Invitation or prohibition?

The tone determines success. A phone-free lunch break once or twice a week, announced in a friendly way and clearly marked, acts as an invitation to take a real break. A ban, on the other hand, creates defiance. It's not about discipline, but about offering a protected space where no one has to feel guilty about not being "available."

Why is this especially valuable in the hybrid world of work?

Especially where work and private life blend digitally, a conscious offline break is a strong signal of modern leadership: availability has limits, and recovery is encouraged. Teams report less afternoon fatigue and more genuine connection – a small step with an impact on the entire break culture. You can find further measures and their classification in the action area Modern Work Environment.

Tax and health insurance: what is possible

Employer health benefits can be tax-free under § 3 no. 34 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) up to €600 per employee per year — if they are provided in addition to the salary already owed and are either certified (§ 20 SGB V) or implemented within the company's health promotion process. Gym memberships and corporate fitness are not covered. For ZPP-certified courses (e.g. from Upfit), German statutory health insurers can reimburse all or part of the course fee to their insured members — then only the amount exceeding that reimbursement is tax-free. Projects within the company can be funded under § 20b SGB V, with no entitlement. Only your tax adviser can confirm the tax exemption.
